Parental Involvement School Requirements

Three decades of research provides convincing evidence that parents are an important influence in helping their children achieve high academic standards. The schools collaborate with parents to help their children learn and when parents participate in school activities and decision-making about their children's education, children achieve at higher levels. Children do best when parents are enabled to play four key roles in their children's learning: teachers (helping children at home), supporters (contributing their skills to the school), advocates (helping children receive fair treatment), and decision makers (participating in joint problem-solving with the school at every level). (Henderson and Berla, 1994)

Parents involvement with their children's schools can take many forms. Those forms need to be determined at two levels. One is at the school district level were general policies are determined. The other is at each school so that parental involvement is tailored to meet each child's, parent's, and schools needs and capabilities

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
UNDER NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

Each school receiving Title I funds is to have a written parental involvement policy. The policy is to be developed with participation of the parents of participating children. Parents shall be notified of the policy in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, provided in a language the parents can understand. Such policy shall be made available to the local community and updated periodically to meet the changing needs of parents and the school. The Parental Involvement Policy is to describe how the school will:
• Involve parents in the development of the policy and how such opportunity will be communicated to the parents of participating children. Section 1118 (c) delineates specific communication requirements with parents that schools are to undertake.
• Through the school-parent compact explain how school staff and parents will be jointly responsible for improving the students' academic performance.
• Assist parents in becoming effective participants in their children's education.
• Provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children, including providing information and school reports required under Section 1111 in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language such parents understand.
